介绍:As a Kindergarten to 12th grade college preparatory school, Ho`ala School provides a rigorous yet nurturing educational experience that fosters the academic and personal success of our students. Our unique educational environment is grounded in character development which instills confidence and independence in every child. Individualized attention allows us to adapt to a wide range of student abilities and produces accelerated learning opportunities. Nationally recognized by the Character Education Partnership in Washington, D.C., 100% of Ho`ala graduates are accepted into colleges of their choice. At Ho`ala School students are listened to, taken seriously and feel needed, therefore creating the sense of belonging and significance which is crucial to raising a child's self confidence. Classes are small with a teacher/student ratio of 1/11. The average teacher retention is 10 years. Our fine arts program allows children to express themselves through visual and performing arts. Respect, Responsibility, Resourcefulness and Responsiveness are all traits of a Ho`ala student. Ho`ala families come from Wahiawa, Mililani, Waialua, Haleiwa, Waipahu, Waipio, Kunia, Ewa, Kapolei, Waianae, Pearl City, Aiea and Honolulu including all branches of the military.
History
Established in 1986.
Ho`ala School was founded in 1986 by a Catholic nun, Sister Joan Madden. Sister Joan came to Hawaii in 1962 and started Our Lady of Sorrows School in Wahiawa. The Ho`ala program was developed by Joan and Honolulu psychologist Raymond Corsini (since deceased). The program stresses freedom of choice, individual responsibility and equality of parents, students and teachers. "One of the attitudes fundamental to this program is that children learn more from who and how we are with them then from what we merely say to them," Joan said. Classes began at the Wahiawa YMCA on Kilani Avenue with 91 students. Although founded by a Catholic nun, Ho`ala is non-sectarian. Sister Joan, a member of the community of the Sisters of Charity, Blessed Virgin Mary, passed away on October 31 in Dubuque, Iowa at the motherhouse of her order.
