美西当地时间2020年3月17日，据多家主流媒体的报道，苹果，耐克，nordstrom和许多其他零售商为了遏制冠状病毒的爆发，都暂时关闭了商店，以确保员工在家中的安全，并鼓励消费者也这样做。但是，在某些州，根据当地法规，所有不必要的零售业都被迫关闭。
Gordon Haskett分析师Chuck Grom说，他预计购物中心零售商（包括百货商店）的同店销售下降将“比我们在9-11后和2008年大萧条时期所看到的情况严重得多”
